This sweet girl was only 10 at the time of her accident this last August that changed her life completely. She was involved in a semi-truck versus SUV collision when a semi crossed the centerline on their way home after back-to-school shopping, devastatingly killing her mother and little brother, severely injured her two other brothers and giving her a major TBI, this sweet family is from Davenport, NE.
She was transferred to Children’s Hospital in Omaha from Mary Lanning in Hastings NE. Upon arrival to Children’s Hospital she was in very critical condition, they gave her 15% chance of survival & said it was very serious. Daniel states, "being a father and trying to juggle what happened to the rest of my family and then to process this severe injury with my daughter was very overwhelming, I was lost, I was confused and ultimately I was devastated. My daughter lies in a bed, lifeless.... the noise of monitors.... the foot traffic from doctors and nurses. I didn’t know where to begin. I didn’t know what questions to be asked. I didn’t know what to expect, but what I did know she was a fighter....she never gave up."
She was then transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation after her release from Children’s Hospital where they worked with her effortlessly and made sure she got the care and recovery she needed. She spent a total of 90 days recovering. Prior to this little girls accident she excelled and was unstoppable on the court, ball fields and even played tackle football with the boys!!!!
Daniel goes on to say, "As a father of a child & survivor of a TBI, I struggled every day with the cares & the obstacles that goes on in daily life of now being a single father and grief that is immeasurable. I am so thankful for her being home now. She is back into school full-time five days a week all day long, she is a true miracle coming from 15% survival rate to what she is now I am so thankful for the nurses and doctors and for her not giving up for her being a fighter and accepting the challenges of what’s ahead of her, she's my true hero!"
Daniel Schlichtman, I'm so glad we met through our Children’s journey's, even though through terrible circumstances, there is a comfort knowing we don't walk this walk alone. I'd love to add that his oldest son Jace reminds me dearly of Carson and he is always rooting him on, he will often send him messages to "Keep Fighting Carson!" and assured me he wants to represent that #8 on the football field one day!!!! We are a TBI Family, it's something beautiful out of a tragedy.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful and heroic story with us all!!! Please add this family to your prayers and reach out to Daniel for any additional ways to help their journey to be a little easier.
