Real Connections. Real Support. Nebraska Connects Peers for Brain Injury Survivors & Families
A statewide program connects survivors and caregivers with trained mentors who understand the journey firsthand.
April 16, 2026 – Nebraska (statewide) — The Brain Injury Association of Nebraska (BIA-NE) offers a Peer Mentorship Program — a statewide initiative designed to connect brain injury survivors and caregivers with trained mentors who understand the journey firsthand.
A brain injury is any injury to the brain that can affect how a person thinks, feels, or functions. It can happen from a fall, car crash, sports injury, or other medical event such as a stroke, and its effects are often not visible to others.
Survivors and families frequently report feeling isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn next. The Peer Mentorship Program helps bridge that gap by pairing individuals with mentors who bring lived experience, empathy, and encouragement.
“Peer mentorship is about connection,” said Peggy Reisher, MSW, Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska. “It’s not therapy. It’s not case management. It’s real support from someone who understands the road you’re on.”
Participants are thoughtfully matched based on shared experiences and goals. Mentors receive training and ongoing support from BIA-NE to ensure a safe, supportive, and meaningful experience.
The program is open to:
- Brain injury survivors at any stage of recovery
- Family members and caregivers seeking connection and understanding
By strengthening peer relationships, the program aims to reduce isolation, build confidence, and support individuals as they navigate life after brain injury.
Because no one should have to navigate brain injury alone, BIA-NE continues to connect people to the support that understands.
