Mother Nature had other plans for Blazing Trails for Brain Injury this year.
By Saturday morning, the clouds were already rolling in, the radar was looking rude, and the satellite images were giving us every reason to side-eye the sky. Still, because brain injury survivors, families, volunteers, and supporters are nothing if not resilient, a group of intrepid participants showed up hopeful that we might still be able to start the event.
Unfortunately, safety had to come first. With the weather continuing to look threatening, we made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk & Roll.
It was disappointing. It was frustrating. And yes, we are filing a strongly worded complaint with Mother Nature.
But even with the weather interruption, Blazing Trails still showed the heart of this community. Because Blazing Trails has never really been just about crossing a finish line. It is about showing up for brain injury survivors, caregivers, families, professionals, and everyone across Nebraska who believes no one should have to navigate brain injury alone.
And this year, people still showed up. This year’s event had 121 total registrations, including:
- 39 registered for the 5K Run
- 54 registered for the 1-Mile Walk or Roll
- 21 registered as virtual participants
- 5 youth registrations
- 2 day-of registrations
Although we were unable to hold the full event as planned, about 88 people still came out, including participants, spectators, volunteers, and staff. That says a lot about the people who support this mission.
Blazing Trails also raised important funds for the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska. Between sponsorships, corporate donations, registrations, and individual gifts, the event brought in $17,907.69 to support brain injury prevention, education, advocacy, and resource facilitation across Nebraska.
We are especially grateful for:
- $12,000 in corporate sponsorships
- $1,750 in corporate donation
- $3,356.89 in registration income
- $700.80 in individual donations through RunSignUp
- $100 in day-of registrations
A huge thank-you goes to our generous sponsors and donors, whose support made this event possible even when the weather did not cooperate:
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, Rembolt Ludtke LLP, Union Bank & Trust, Urbom Maaske Law, Pint Nine Brewing Co., Atwood Law, Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association, Security First Bank, ACCESSbank, Scheels, White House Bar & Grill, and Peak Performance – The Running Store.
Even without finish-line times, we still had some winners to celebrate.
Congratulations to our youngest registrants, Coleman Johnson and Callaway Johnson. We also celebrated our most experienced registrant, Jean Masek.
And a big congratulations to our top fundraiser, board member Adam Gehringer. Adam showed up not only as a board member, but as a champion for this mission — helping raise awareness and support for Nebraskans affected by brain injury.
We also know some of our virtual participants may have completed their own Blazing Trails walk, run, or roll from wherever they were. If that was you, we would love to see it! Please send us your photos so we can celebrate the many ways this community kept moving, even when the official event could not.
While we did not get the sunny, high-energy event day we had hoped for, Blazing Trails still did what it was created to do: bring people together around brain injury awareness, community, and support.
‘To every sponsor, donor, registrant, volunteer, virtual participant, and brave soul who looked at that sky and still showed up — thank you.
We are disappointed that the weather cut the day short, but we are not disappointed in this community. You showed up. You gave. You supported. And you reminded us, once again, that brain injury survivors and families do not walk this road alone.
Mother Nature may have taken this round, but she did not take the purpose, the generosity, or the heart behind Blazing Trails.
We will be back next year — hopefully under less dramatic skies, with even more people ready to walk, run, roll, cheer, give, and blaze the trail together.
The Brain Injury Association of Nebraska not only offers information and referral, but case management to find the resources and make positive changes to live a more fulfilling future with better coping strategies as well as memory aids on board.
