When I heard about BIA I was skeptical. Simply by the words Brain Injury Association. My judgement of the title was way off… Being as open minded as I am, and seeking ways to better my life, I took a chance and signed up for the program. I have always found it hard to ask for help, too much pride, so by cautiously meeting with the facilitators/counselors for this program I found them to be very warming, non-judgmental, and I have become 100% trusting of them and the program they represent.
With the dedication and compassion my teachers present to helping people find understanding and ability to become aware of the way my mind functions and to help identify and correct impulsive and cognitive behaviors. In a “nutshell”, this program offers many tools and ways to apply them to help a person to pause, take a breath, and collect so that one can analyze and assess their thinking process and help a person make better choices.
Also, on another note, this program is designed to help other people to understand other people even if they aren’t the one seeking help with themselves. They can utilize the tools offered from this program so that they too can become compassionate facilitators.
I am a firm believer that if I were to have been offered this class a long time ago, I would have become aware as I am now and would have strongly advocated for this program. I feel that this program is greatly powerful and effective that not only jails should offer BIA services, I feel that this program should be implemented into schools, or at least a requirement of all teachers to have to obtain a certificate of completion as a teachers requirement to professionally become a teacher. This would help identify and help rehabilitate people at an early age and not resort to taking measures of trial due to lack of knowing what’s really going on with people.
I have taken this program very serious and appreciate the creator of this program and especially the counselors that accepted and are teaching me: Shir, MenDi, and Marisa.
This to me is a program of “Tools and Awareness”.
Thank You!
