When Ethen was just a young child, his life changed in an instant. A trusted daycare provider shook him, causing a traumatic brain injury that left him paralyzed on his right side. He spent a month in the hospital, surrounded by machines and the kind of fear no family ever expects to face.
After returning home, the medical challenges didn’t stop. Ethen began experiencing seizures, which led to brain surgery. Today, the left side of his brain is no longer there. What remained was the uncertainty of what his life would look like going forward — and a family determined to help him live it fully.
Recovery wasn’t quick. It wasn’t simple. It was years of therapy, patience, adaptation, and learning how to do daily life differently. Not having the use of his right hand makes even small tasks more complicated — yet Ethen never complains. He simply keeps going.
Over time, Ethen found his place — starting with music. Band gave him purpose, confidence, and belonging. That sense of identity carried him into adulthood.
After high school, he participated in a post-secondary transition program that helps young adults with disabilities build job skills and independence. Through that program, Ethen found meaningful work in a restaurant.
Outside of work, Ethen bowls regularly, enjoys video games, and stays connected with his community. He laughs. He shows up. He chooses joy. Every day, he proves that a brain injury is something a person lives with — not what defines who they are.
